Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to land mega payday after Wrexham promotion

Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham sealed a third successive promotion after beating Charlton Athletic on Saturday and the club’s famous owners are in line for a big payday

Wrexham’s promotion to the Championship comes with an added financial bonus for their famous owners. Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are set to enjoy an £8million boost in TV revenue after the Red Dragons sealed promotion with a game to spare.

The Welsh side extended their unbeaten run to nine matches with a 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic on Saturday. Wycombe Wanderers could have taken things to the final day with a win of their own at Leyton Orient, but they instead fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Speaking to talkSPORT weeks before promotion was sealed, football finance expert Kieran Maguire delved into the numbers behind promotion. “If we start with the money coming in, which is spectacular, Wrexham made three times as much money as any other club in League Two, more than any other club in League One, and they would actually be in the top half of the Championship,” he said.

“Therefore, they’re not that far behind the big hitters of the Championship, the likes of Stoke and Norwich and so on. It’s an incredible achievement in terms of bringing in the money and it’s their ability to become an international brand which has really driven this.

“I was teaching in Charlotte in Carolina last year, and the only football shirts I saw were those of Wrexham, which is an amazing achievement, and that’s on the back of the documentary. If they get promoted this year, that adds another £8million of TV money because they’ll be in the Championship TV deal. That would put them fairly close to all of the clubs, with the exception of those who are in receipt of parachute payments, in the Championship.”

This is the third successive season in which Wrexham have won promotion. They topped the Nationa League in 2022-23 and finished second behind Stockport in League Two last term.

After racking up 88 points last term, they have already guaranteed a higher tally in the third tier. However, even if they win their final game of the season to climb to 92, they’ll be nowhere near runaway leaders Birmingham City.

Wrexham made a number of summer signings to boost their promotion hopes and one of those new arrivals, Ollie Rathbone, has done his part during the run-in. The one-time Manchester United academy prospect scored in last weekend’s win at Blackpool and set his team on their way against Charlton.

Moments after Rathbone’s 15th-minute opener, January signing Sam Smith doubled the hosts’ lead. The 27-year-old, who joined in a seven-figure move from Reading in January, then added his second and Wrexham’s third in the second half.

All three promotions have been achieved with manager Phil Parkinson in the dugout, and co-owner Reynolds hailed the boss after the latest achievement. “You can look at so many beating hearts at this club and it all starts with Phil,” he said.
