What film will win the coveted Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival later this month? No frontrunners will emerge until the fest officially starts on May 13, but it’s a safe bet that Kelly Reichardt‘s “The Mastermind” will be in the running for Cannes’ top prize.

And Deadline has some first-look images from Reichardt’s latest to drum up hype before its world premiere. The pics don’t provide anything too spoiler-y, but they confirm the film’s 1970s setting and feature actors Josh O’Connor and Alaina Haim in period dress.
Set in Massachusetts circa 1970, “The Mastermind” stars O’Connor as JB Mooney, an unemployed carpenter planning his first art heist. But when his score goes wrong, his life tailspins even further out of control.
“The Mastermind” also stars John Magaro, Hope Davis, Bill Camp, Gaby Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Eli Gelb, Cole Doman, Javion Allen, Matthew Maher, and Rhenzy Feliz. That’s quite a buzzy ensemble cast Reichardt has assembled, and it’s nice to see her reunite with regular Magaro for another turn. Producers on the film include Neil Kopp, Anish Savjani, and Vincent Savino via filmscience. filmscience has produced all of Reichardt’s films since “Old Joy,” but this is just the filmmaker’s second time working with MUBI; 2021’s “First Cow” is the other.
Current it-actor O’Connor stars in another film at this year’s Cannes: “The History Of Sound.” As for Haim, she has Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “One Battle After Another” and A24‘s “The Drama” with Robert Pattinson and Zendaya on the horizon. Meanwhile, Magaro, who starred in Reichardt’s “First Cow” and her previous film “Showing Up,” stars next in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s “The Bride!“
Stay tuned for an official world premiere date for “The Mastermind” at Cannes later this month. In the meantime, check out the crime film’s first-look pics below.
