The next “Hunger Games” prequel has its new stars, emphasis on “new.”
THR reports that newcomers Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak will star in “Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping” as Haymitch Abernathy and Lenore Dove Baird. Fan favorite Haymitch needs no introduction, but Peak’s character might: Lenore is young Haymitch’s girlfriend. Meanwhile, Deadline reports that McKenna Grace has also been cast in the new film as Maysilee Donner’s, Haymitch’s fellow District 12 tribune for the games.

Francis Lawrence returns to direct “Sunrise On The Reaping,” with Bill Ray also back to adapt Suzanne Collins‘ book for the screenplay. Set 24 years before the original story, the bestselling sequel centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy as he competes in his first Hunger Games, which is also the tournament’s 50th anniversary, christened the Second Quarter Quell. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson produce via Color Force, with Cameron MacConomy on board as an executive producer.
Here’s a quick press statement about the castings from Lionsgate co-president Erin Westerman: “The “Hunger Games” franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire. After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out—not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles.”
Other upcoming roles for Zada include the Prime Video series “We Were Liars” and the Netflix adaptation of “East Of Eden” with Florence Pugh and Mike Faist. As for Peak, she was one of the stars of the short-lived “Gossip Girl” reboot series, and stars opposite Phoebe Dynevor in the upcoming thriller “Shiver.” Meanwhile, Grace’s career is more established than her new “Hunger Games” co-stars. Recent work for the actress includes the two recent “Ghostbusters” films, “Malignant,” and “Crater.” Grace also has a slew of upcoming projects, too: “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2,” “Scream 7,” “Anniversary,” and “New Year’s Rev.”
