Gerrard is out of work after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq and is being heavily linked with a return to Ibrox in the summer when the 49ers Enterprises takeover goes through
With 49ers Enterprises edging closer to their takeover of Rangers, talk of a managerial return for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox just won’t go away.
But in the view of former Gers full back Alan Hutton, his return to Govan wouldn’t be universally welcomed by all sections of the club’s vast support.
The Liverpool legend previously ended the Light Blues 10-year wait for a league title when he led Rangers to an unbeaten season en route to their Premiership triumph in 2021 – also stopping rivals Celtic from clinching a record 10th championship on the spin in the process.
But six months later, the England hero jumped ship to Aston Villa, where he lasted less than a year before getting the boot from the English Premier League side.
Gerrard is out of work again after leaving Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq and has been touted to step back into the Rangers hotseat in the summer, with other big names including Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez also linked with the role.
And while the 44-year-old’s previous achievements with Gers make re-hiring him a bit of a no-brainer, Hutton reckons some punters would prefer an appointment with no ties to the club at all.
Asked in an interview with Football Insider – by way of NewBettingOffers.co.uk – if Gerrard coming back would excite him, he replied: “Yeah, yeah, I think it does.
“I mean, does a manager coming back for the second time, does it always work?
“Possibly not, but I think he knows the club, what it’s all about, what the fans are like, the expectation, he knows everything.
“He’s won the league there, and that’s the be-all and end-all, so he knows how to get it done.
“I think some of the fans would be happy with that, but also they maybe want something new, something fresh, it’s going to be a big change in the club, I think over the next few years, and maybe somebody coming in with new ideas is something maybe we’d prefer.”
