Sweeney will star in “Split Fiction,” based on the game of the same name that took consoles by storm earlier this year. The sci-fi fantasy game follows a pair of authors, Mio and oe who become trapped in the worlds they wrote, with players able to use both characters in a co-op adventure that includes split-screen combat and other challenges. However, even though Sweeney is on board, it’s unclear which character she plays in the movie. That’ll likely be confirmed once more casting for “Split Fiction” happens soon. Also of note: this is the second video game adaptation Sweeney signs on to this month after Michael Bay‘s “OutRun.”
Written by director and Hazelight studio chief Josef Fares and Sebastian Johannson, “Split Fiction” is easily one of 2025’s most successful new video games. After it released on March 6, it solid over two million copies in its first week, with sales numbers continuing to rise through April. It’s also received unanimous positive reviews, a win-win situation that attracted Hollywood studios to start a bidding war for rights to a film adaptation at the Game Developers Conference last month. That war is still on, and it’s unclear which studio is the favorite, if there even is one at this point.
But who else is involved with the “Split Fiction” movie? Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson will produce the adaptation via their Story Kitchen banner (formerly dj2 Entertainment). Chu also produces via Electric Somewhere, with Sweeney on board as an executive producer. Goldberg and Johnson’s package should fetch a high price, as they’re involved with several other recent videogame film adaptations, including the “Sonic The Hedgehog” movies and Lionsgate‘s upcoming “Streets Of Rage” film.
Stay tuned for more news about “Split Fiction” as it develops. As for Sweeney, she has three other projects on the way before this film: “Echo Valley,” on Apple TV+ on June 13; “The Housemaid,” in theaters this Christmas; and her Christy Martin biopic, which may or may not get a 2025 release. Oh, and there’s “Eden” from last year, which finally hits theaters on August 22, and “Euphoria” S3 forthcoming for the actress, too.
