Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”) has landed quite the project as she’ll be leading “She Gets It From Me,” which hails from German writer/director Julia von Heinz (“Treasure”), as the project is heading to the film market at the Cannes Film Festival next month with Embankment handling sales.
Variety shared the exciting news that sees Zegler playing a young woman looking to rekindle a relationship with her estranged punk-rock mother, Charlotte, in the wake of her daughter’s engagement.

Marisa Tomei, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1993 for her smart-mouthed car expert Mona Lisa Vitto in “My Cousin Vinny,” will be playing the aforementioned hard-living biological mother of Zegler’s Nicky. She also earned nominations for her work from “In The Bedroom” and “The Wrestler.” General audiences will likely be more familiar with Tomei’s blockbuster work playing Aunt May in the last three “Spider-Man” movies, the massively popular MCU installments have generated Sony Pictures over $3 billion at the global box office.
As the outlet pointed out, the project is based on a true story, and follows Nicky (Zegler), “whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother, Charlotte (Tomei). Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect.”
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Zegler is coming off an extremely disappointing reaction to her live-action “Snow White” film at Disney that saw the young actress endure a lot of perplexing coverage about her support for the civilians of Palestine. That was used in various “reports” as an excuse and narrative for the film not connecting with audiences (essentially blaming Zegler over the film itself).
However, most of those Disney remakes have been seen as redundant/shot-for-shot cash-grabs (super cheap development costs that led to Disney shutting out original creators/animators from royalties or credit) for years, and their shelf life might be ending as reports of Disney pivoting from a live-action version of “Tangled” is said to be connected to “Snow White” outcome (rumblings the studio is evaluating future remakes entirely).

The awkward family reunion concept of “She Gets It From Me” sounds in line with von Heinz’s previous English-language effort, “Treasure,” as the father-daughter dramedy set in Poland paired up veteran British comedian Stephen Fry with Lena Dunham.
