Fans holding out hope for Star Wars movie news beyond just The Mandalorian & Grogu are in luck. At Star Wars Celebration Japan, Lucasfilm announced that the next film to hit theaters after Mando is called Star Wars: Starfighter. Shawn Levy directs, Ryan Gosling stars, shooting starts this fall, and it’ll be out May 28, 2027.

It’s a standalone adventure that takes place a few years after the events of Episode 9. “This script is so good,” Gosling said. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure. There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this kind of story than Shawn.”
Levy clarified that it’s “not a prequel, not a sequel, but a new adventure” with “a collection of all new characters.” Gosling and Levy were both surprise guests at the event, with Gosling’s mom even sharing an image of his bedsheets when he was five. They were of The Empire Strikes Back.
Levy has been attached to Star Wars since 2022, while he was still working on what would eventually become the billion-dollar hit Deadpool & Wolverine. Things went relatively quiet after that as he was finishing his Marvel movie, and Jonathan Tropper (who worked with Levy on The Adam Project) began writing the script. Then, earlier this year, Gosling was attached to the project before Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy suggested it would be the next film to hit theaters after The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Anything can happen with in-development Star Wars movies, so until filming begins, there’s probably still some uncertainty to be expected. However, everything has lined up so far.
