The full-back saw red as the struggling Tractor Boys were trounced by the Gunners and Keane was not impressed
Leif Davis’ tackle that earned the Ipswich man a red card against Arsenal has been branded as “crazy” by Roy Keane.
The full-back saw red 32 minutes into the Tractor Boy’s 4-0 drubbing by Mikel Arteta’s side for a horror challenge on Bukaya Saka, on a day when Celtic-bound Kieran Tierney made his 100th Premier League appearance for the Gunners.
And he didn’t find any sympathy from the Manchester United icon, who was certainly no strange to a tough tackle – or red card – in his own career.
Speaking on Sky Sports the former Celtic midfielder said: “He’d had a warning earlier and he’s getting frustrated, but this is unacceptable. It’s a dangerous tackle.
“Saka’s going nowhere, he knows what he’s doing. He seems surprised he gets a red but we’ve looked at it and I think it’s the right decision. Crazy tackle.”
Jamie Carragher, who was also covering the game for Sky Sports, echoed similar sentiments when the studio discussed the incident at half-time. He felt the challenge looked worse after watching it back and praised Kavanagh for getting the call spot on in-play.
He said: “They looked at it a few times because you’re thinking it’s almost one of those where it’s in between a yellow and a red… almost like an orange if you like.
“But the more you look at it, it’s a really good decision from the officials and what he is doing is absolutely ridiculous. There is no way he can get the ball.”
Gunner boss Mikel Arteta confirmed that the England star had escaped any serious injury, even though he’d been left in pain after the clash.
He said: “I didn’t see the tackle, it was quite fast but I didn’t see it it. It was quite far from the bench. But after watching it I think it’s a good decision from the referee. He is in a bit of pain, but thankfully it doesn’t look like anything too serious.”
