The Manchester United used Gers as a harsh yardstick to judge second leg rivals Athletic Bilbao
Roy Keane has said Manchester United have nothing to fear against Athletic Bilbao – because the Spanish club only sneaked past Rangers.
The Ibrox club were knocked out of the Europa League by the La Liga side 2-0 on aggregate with Nico Williams having the final word with a back post header.
Barry Ferguson’s men made life hell for Ernesto Valverde’s team at Ibrox in the first leg and survived a 0-0 draw despite going down to 10 men early on after Robin Propper dismissal.
Cyriel Dessers then saw what looked a clear penalty ignored after Dani Vivian tore apart his shirt while pulling him to the ground in the San Mames.
And former Celtic star Keane was not impressed in the least with what he saw by the Basque outfit and used the opportunity to mock Rangers for their 17-point gap to their bitter rivals in the Premiership table.
Speaking on SkyBet’s Stick to Football Podcast, fellow pundit Jill Scott queried if the second leg between United and Bilbao at Old Trafford will be so cut and dry despite the Premier League side holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg.
An angered Keane replied: “United are through Jill.”
She replied: “You just don’t know.”
He responded: “Bilbao just about beat Rangers. Rangers are about 300 points behind frickin’ Celtic! My goodness.”
Keane then made a £100 bet for charity with Scott that United would coast through to the next round.
If they do it would set up a possible final with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham who hold a 3-1 lead against Norwegians Bodo/Glimt.
Gary Neville back up his old captain adding: “Tottenham I think might have a bump or two over in their game. But I think United are definitely there.”
Keane added: “It is a great game for both of them to try and get into the Champions League, because of the disgraceful league performances. They should count their blessings.”
It’s fair to say many Rangers will now be keeping a close eye on Thursday’s game at Old Trafford for a different reason.
