Ever since news broke that Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan were teaming up on a supernatural horror movie, everyone couldn’t help but be excited. Studios were reportedly trying to outbid each other to grab it, and it was Coogler’s first original work, so how could you not be curious what it’d look like for him to play by his own rules? The end result is Sinners, which has looked great from the first trailer and continued to look more and more promising.
At time of writing, the movie’s opened to pretty glowing reception from critics and audiences. Some are already putting it as a contender for one of the year’s best, and as you’ve probably seen online, the folks who’ve seen and loved it sure do love it—like how Minecraft has its claws in the youths, this is currently the movie of the moment for adults. Even those that aren’t as effusive about it have given Coogler his props for taking some wild swings that are worth the price of admission on their own.
Time will tell how Sinners fares in terms of staying power, both financially and culturally. Cooger’s Black Panther and Creed movies had sizable tails, and this one may warrant a repeat or two just for the varying aspect ratios and a killer long take. Right now, we want to know your thoughts on it: did it live up to everything you hoped for and then some, were you not as in love with it as you thought you’d be? Tell us those things and more in the comments below.
