This Is the Most Affordable Lake-front Destination in the U.S. This Summer

A new study has found the most affordable destinations in the U.S. within 25 miles of a lake. The top location cost just $1,818 total for a weekend lake getaway for two people.

There’s nothing more emblematic of summer than the image of jumping into a lake, splashing along a tree lined shore, and reapplying sunscreen in between bites of freshly grilled hot dogs. The simplicity and bliss of a summer lake vacation is possible this year, even if you are operating on a tighter budget than usual.

A new study from Beach.com analyzed cities within 25 miles of lake fronts across the U.S. The report evaluated each location based on a combination of factors including the costs of dining, everyday expenses, airfare, hotels, and vacation rentals for two adults, as well as how much pricing changes from season to season—plus how walkable each destination is. With all of this data, a ranking was created of the most affordable lake-front destinations in the country.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, came in first place, costing an average of $1,818 for two people when they stay at a hotel. For a vacation rental stay it’s still pretty affordable, averaging $1,936. The city has the most affordable lakeside dining experience of every city surveyed and, combined with the other factors, comes out as the least pricey option.

Milwaukee offers a ton as a vacation spot. There are nine beaches lining Lake Michigan in the city, including a state park, where you can easily access swimming and numerous other activities. Bradford Beach, which sits right across the road from the Bogk House by Frank Lloyd Wright, is considered America’s most accessible beach with beach wheelchairs and rollout mats, plus tons of options for volleyball and waterfront dining. Meanwhile, McKinley Beach is great for wading and hanging out at the beer garden in the park. At Grant Beach, you can be more ensconced in nature with opportunities for birding.

Whether you’re looking for a family destination or want to spend a long day by the lake and go brewery hopping at night, there’s a little something for everyone in the city. Milwaukee is also home to numerous art and history museums, sporting events, summer farmers markets, and a jam packed calendar of festivals. (The city is literally nicknamed the City of Festivals.)

The Beach.com ranking has a great mix of affordable suggestions all over the Midwest, including in Utah, Michigan, and Illinois. And if you’re looking for additional lake vacation inspiration this summer, Travel + Leisure has the intel on the most beautiful lakes in the country and the lakes with the bluest waters in the world.
