Slot quiet on signings amid Frimpong link

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he will not be drawn on transfer speculation as the Premier League champions prepare to face Brighton on Monday night.

After right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold finally announced he is leaving Anfield this summer Slot has been linked with moves for several replacements.

The latest reports are that the Reds are poised to trigger the €35million release clause of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong – but Slot said he is in no rush to add to his squad.

He said: “For a whole season it was about contract extensions and now everyone wants to know who is coming in.

“We don’t talk about it in public until we sign them and then you can ask me all about it. Conor Bradley can play right-back, Joe Gomez, so it is not like once Trent leaves I don’t know what to do but we are always looking at interesting players, who can improve our squad.

“You assume we’re bringing in new players? We’re very happy with the players we’ve got.

“It’s our decision but also some players aren’t looking forward to another season of not playing a lot, so it is an ongoing process so we have to be prepared if we can strengthen the squad but it is difficult because there is a reason we won the league – because we have so many great players. This club has shown so many times in the past that we will make the right decision.”

Alexander-Arnold was jeered by sections of the Anfield crowd when he came on as a substitute against Arsenal, but Slot is keen for everyone to move on.

He said: “People talked about it to me and we had the reaction from the fans in the stadium, pundits have talked, and now let’s draw a line and focus on the fact we’ve won the league and focus on that feeling and be distracted that much by Trent’s situation.”

Liverpool could become only the ninth side to score in every one of their away games in an English top-flight season with a goal on the south coast, and only the fourth to do so in a league with at least 20 teams in it, after both Arsenal and Manchester United in 2001-02 (19 games), and Arsenal in 1930-31 (21 games).
