Liverpool are cruising to the Premier League title after going 13 points clear of rivals Arsenal at the top of the table, but not many fans or pundits backed the Reds to win the league this season
Liverpool were not backed by a single BBC pundit to win the Premier League this season, with only two of 30 predictions even tipping Arne Slot’s men to come second. The Reds are closing in on the title in Slot’s first season in charge but very few saw it coming after pre-season favourites Manchester City and Arsenal collapsed.
Slot’s men have been magnificent, led by starring performances from the likes of Mohamed Salah – who has netted 32 times so far – with the team losing just twice in the league.
Liverpool are 13 points clear of Arsenal at the top and know they could wrap up the title in the coming weeks – but most fans and pundits felt the team would struggle to challenge the top contenders following the exit of manager Jurgen Klopp.
Now, BBC pundits have been left red-faced after all 30 of them refused to tip Liverpool for the title, instead choosing to back either Arsenal or City.
In fact, only Fara Williams and Stephen Warnock even believed Liverpool would finish as runners-up. A handful of pundits – including Steve Sidwell, Leon Osman and Pat Nevin – didn’t even think the Reds would finish in the top four.

A total of 19 pundits felt City would clinch their fifth straight title, while 11 backed Arsenal to deliver their first Premier League crown since 2004.
In fairness, it has been a pretty unpredictable season that has thrown up a host of shocks – including Nottingham Forest putting in an incredible surge to challenge for the top four with just six games remaining. They are currently fourth in the table, below third-placed Newcastle.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have had a shocking fall from grace after a mid-season slump saw then win once in 11 games and Pep Guardiola’s men are now battling just to secure a Champions League spot.
It has been a hugely competitive campaign, with just three points separating Forest in fourth and Aston Villa in seventh.
There is a fierce battle to come in the top five, given that England has been granted an additional Champions League spot this season.
It now seems impossible that Liverpool will blow their title dream – especially now with Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals – but Slot has urged his squad to focus and not be complacent.
“We know we still have to win two more games, which I have tried to come back to every single time: it has been on 32 occasions difficult enough for us.
“First win two and that’s the only thing we should focus on and this week we should try to improve, improve, improve more and more to give ourselves a better chance of winning a game of football next week.”
