The current Everton executive is reportedly the man Patrick Stewart wants to fill Ibrox role when he leaves Goodison Park
Kevin Thelwell is the front runner to become Rangers’ new sporting director.
Record Sport exclusively revealed that the Ibrox club are close to confirming an appointment after Patrick Stewart led a two month search to identify the new head football honcho in Govan.
Now the Daily Mail claims that Thelwell is the man the Light Blues want to oversee their football operation.
Thelwell is currently employed in a similar role at Everton, although is set to exit Goodison Park in the summer and won’t be staying on as the Toffees make the move to their new stadium.
And it looks like he may well be making the move to Glasgow with a deal thought to be imminent.
The 51-year-old has previously worked at Wolves and New York Red Bulls, as well as roles with Derby County and Preston North End after a coaching role with the English FA.
He rose through the Molineux ranks, working his way up from the academy to become head of recruitment then director of football.
Thelwell then headed across the pond for a two year spell as head of sport for MLS franchise New York Red Bulls, but returned to England with Everton nearly three years ago.
Speaking when he kicked off the recruitment search, Stewart outlined the type of candidate he was looking for, saying: “We are now in the market for a Sporting Director.
“That role will put someone right at the top of the football tree; an experienced football person who will be responsible for all aspects of the football club to ensure they’re working together towards fulfilling our holistic joined-up plan.”
