Jane Schoenbrun’s 2021 feature debut, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, signaled the arrival of a filmmaker with a unique vision—not to mention the ability to fascinate and freak out viewers in new and disturbing ways. That continued with 2024’s I Saw the TV Glow, one of the year’s most adventurous films both stylistically and narratively. So naturally, we’re on board for whatever Schoenbrun is up to next—and their new movie sounds like it will not disappoint.
The Hollywood Reporter brings the exciting news of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma starring Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and Gillian Anderson. Schoenbrun describes it as “my best attempt at the ‘sleepover classic’: an insane yet cozy midnight odyssey that beckons to unsuspecting viewers from the horror section at the local video store.”
In. Sold. 100%. We also love that Schoenbrun says “I make movies I wish existed when I was a kid” and promises that Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma will unleash “a plague-like flood of blood, guts, and various other fluids to rain down on us all.”
Mubi, which had a huge hit with another body fluid-filled movie last year (The Substance), will be distributing Schoenbrun’s latest in North America and beyond. Just about the only thing we don’t like about this news is that THR doesn’t note a release window. Let’s hope it’s sooner than later so we can inject more of Schoenbrun’s creatively calibrated blend of nostalgia and horror directly into our eyeballs.
