IndieWire Earns 2025 Southern California Journalism Award Nominations

IndieWire received 11 nominations for the 2025 Southern California Journalism Awards, including a nomination for Website, News Organization Exclusive to the Internet honoring the entire staff and 10 acknowledgements for staff members in individual categories. The 11 nominations are the most IndieWire has received in a single year, breaking a previous record of nine.

IndieWire’s Chief Film Critic and Reviews Editor David Ehrlich and TV Critic Ben Travers are nominated in the Criticism of Film and Criticism of TV categories, respectively, which encompass their entire bodies of work from the previous year.

IndieWire Digital Director Christian Blauvelt is nominated for Obituary/In Appreciation, TV/Film Personalities for his story The Late Quincy Jones Reinvented Film Music, Defined ‘Fusion,’ and Did Something Extremely Rare at a Post-Screening Q&A.

IndieWire Executive Editor Ryan Lattanzio received a nomination in the Film Feature, Profiles of Creatives category for Sean Baker Breaks Down the Emotional Last Scene of ‘Anora’ — and One of the Great Movie Endings.

Features Writer Jim Hemphill is nominated in the Commentary/Analysis of Film category for his essay One of the Greatest Westerns Ever Made Is Now Streaming After Decades in the Wilderness.

IndieWire’s Craft Editor Sarah Sachat and producer Trevor Wallace are nominated for Regular Podcast for How ‘Hacks’ Keeps Ava and Deborah (and the Audience) on Their Toes in Season 3.

Senior Film Reporter Brian Welk received a nomination for News Feature, Film/Broadcast Related for his story Tax Credits Aren’t Enough: How States Are Wooing Film Productions.

Senior News Editor Samantha Bergeson is nominated for TV/Streaming/Radio Feature for her story Hallmark Holiday Stars Won’t Be Ignored by Hollywood Anymore: ‘I Treat Each Production Like a Martin Scorsese Film.’

IndieWire Associate Editor, Future of Filmmaking Harrison Richlin is nominated in the Entertainment Commentary, TV/Film related category for his essay Why Does Hollywood Hate Marketing Musicals as Musicals?

IndieWire Senior Social and Culture Editor Vincent Perella, Senior Social Media Manager Veronica Flores, and Graphic Designer Tenderly Mondragon are nominated for Best Use of Social Media to Enhance/Cover a Story for their “IndieWire 2024 Wrapped” posts.

The Southern California Journalism Awards are given out each year by the Los Angeles Press Club, which is also responsible for the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards. The winners will be announced at the SoCal Journalism Awards Gala on Sunday, June 22.
