Guy Ritchie to Direct 'Road House 2' for Amazon MGM Studios

“Road House 2″ at Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Guy Ritchie to direct the follow-up action film that will star Jake Gyllenhaal, IndieWire has confirmed.

The sequel to 2024’s remake was announced way back in May of last year after the film got off to an impressive start of 80 million views in its first eight weeks on Prime Video, but this is the first update we’ve gotten since then.

Ritchie will take over for Doug Liman, who originally vented to IndieWire about his frustration that the film went straight to streaming rather than be released theatrically, which was a fallout of the film originally being greenlit at MGM before it was acquired by Amazon. Liman complained that the rug pull left people without compensation, though it was reported that Liman was offered a higher budget in exchange for making the film for streaming.

“My issue on ‘Road House’ is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theaters, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated,” he told IndieWire. “Forget about the effect on the industry — 50 million people saw ‘Road House’ — I didn’t get a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a cent, [producer] Joel Silver didn’t get a cent. That’s wrong.”

Plot details for “Road House 2” are being kept under wraps, but Gyllenhaal will be back as Dalton, the former UFC fighter turned bouncer who has to defend a small town bar from a zany web of criminals seeking to acquire it and tear it down. Will Beall is writing the script. The film is a remake of the 1989 cult favorite “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze, which itself got a sequel.

Producers on the sequel include Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, and Nine Stories Productions’ Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh McLaughlin. Ivan Atkinson will executive produce.

Ritchie and Gyllenhaal previously worked together on another Amazon MGM movie, “The Covenant.” Ritchie has been especially busy of late, as he’s got the adventure film “Fountain of Youth” starring John Krasinski debuting next month on Apple TV+. He’s already this year had the series “Young Sherlock” debut on Prime Video and the Tom Hardy series “Mobland” on Paramount+. His most recent project is “Wife & Dog,” which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Someone buy this guy a beer the next time he drops by the Road House.

Roven is also reuniting with Amazon MGM after he produced the upcoming “Mercy” starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, a sci-fi crime thriller opening in theaters on January 23, 2026.
