Glen Powell & Judd Apatow Teaming Up For A Country Music Comedy Over At Universal

Add another upcoming Glen Powell project to the calendar. THR reports that the actor will team up with Judd Apatow for a new comedy set in the country music industry.  Powell as a country singer whose career is in free fall?  That’s the opposite of what’s going on with Hollywood’s fastest-rising star, but it’s also some of the easiest money Universal Pictures will make at the box office.

Powell and Apatow will write the script together for the fast-developing project, which Universal wants in theaters ASAP. Both will also produce, too. Apatow does so via Apatow Productions and his long-running deal with the studio, while Powell produces via his first-look deal with Universal through his Barnstorm banner with Dan Cohen. Former Universal POP Kevin Misher is also involved through Misher Films.  Universal Senior Executive VP of Production Erik Baiers oversees the project for the studio.

Apatow will direct his film with Powell after he wraps his two-part HBO doc about Mel Brooks that he’s co-helming with Michael Bonfiglio.  It’ll be his first feature film since Netflix‘s”The Bubble” from 2022. Other Universal films for Apatow include “Knocked Up,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and “The King Of Staten Island.”

As for Powell, he has plenty of good stuff ahead.  Ari Aster‘s “Huntington” has its world premiere at Cannes next month, and then hits theaters this summer. And then Edgar Wright‘s “The Running Man“ remake arrives in theaters this Fall for Paramount.  In between, Powell’s “Chad Powers” series premieres on Hulu, and then further down the line, “The Natural Order” with Barry Jenkins at the helm, which just got announced last month.  In other words, Powell will be everywhere over the next 18 months.

If Universal indeed fast-tracks Apatow and Powell’s country music comedy, expect it in theaters sometime next year.
