The Reds are romping to a the Premier League title with sorry Spurs blasted by Manchester United icon Neville
Tottenham might have half an eye on their Europa League semi-final, but Gary Neville was left disgusted by their defending against Liverpool.
With Ange Postecoglou looked destined for the exit door, Spurs had threatened to spoil Liverpool’s Premier League title party when Dominic Solanke headed the London side in front at a rocking Anfield.
But the joy lasted just four minutes, with Luis Diaz quickly levelling – before Alexis Mac Allister’s scorcher and a Cody Gakpo drive put Arne Slot’s champions-elect 3-1 to the good at half-time.
But Lucas Bergvall found himself in Manchester United icon Neville’s firing line, as he ducked when clearing a corner from which Gakpo netted the killer third of the afternoon.
And the ever outspoken Sky Sports pundit certainly didn’t miss as he took aim at the Swede for his part in the goal.
Neville fumed: “They just don’t clear it. Bergvall’s header is appalling and pathetic. He just half ducks his head.
“But take nothing away from Gakpo. What he does really well is just get it away quickly with a shuffle of his feet. He digs it out so well.”
It was a painful afternoon all round for Neville, who confessed that Liverpool are now very much top dogs in English football – as they drew level with United on 20 league titles.
Speaking prior to the game, he said: “It’s a massive deal. When you think of the importance of a league title, you think of the great managers that Liverpool have had in Shankly, Paisley, Kenny Dalglish and Joe Fagan.
“At United as well you talk about the importance of the bread and butter being your league title.
“The accolade of the most successful club you could debate maybe when Manchester United were on 20 titles and obviously Liverpool obviously have more European Cups.
“But once Liverpool get level with Manchester United the painful thing to say is that, unfortunately, the debate is over until Manchester United become successful again and win leagues.
“It should cause real rumours at Old Trafford, the idea that Liverpool – a great football club – is now the most successful in English football.
“That should cause heartache and pain because it took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool. They were miles ahead when Sir Alex Ferguson was appointed.”
