THR reports that the World War II drama “Ruin” will look for buyers once the festival begins on May 13. Gal Gadot and Matthias Schoenaerts will star in the thriller, set in the days just after the German surrender in 1945. Gadot plays a newly released camp prisoner who forms a shaky alliance with Schoenaert’s German officer as they both seek revenge against a Nazi Schutzstaffel unit. Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo co-pen the script, which topped the 2017 Black List, and Niki Caro directs, with plans to shoot the film in early 2026.
Caron and Marc Butan will produce the pic via MadRiver Pictures, while Gadot and Jason Varsano also produce through Pilot Wave Motion Pictures. Executive producers include Gillian Hormel for Ludascripts, Mary Aloe for Aloe Entertainment, and the Firpos. Evan Powell oversees via MadRiver. As for the Cannes Market, The Veterans will handle the project for Cannes buyers and oversees the international rights, while UTA Independent Film Group, WME Independent, and CAA Media Finance handle the US rights.
The Veterans will be busy at Cannes beyond “Ruin.” Along with the war pic, they’ll also handle buyers for James Gray‘s “Paper Tiger and Christian Gudegast‘s “Empire State.” Last year, the company had two splashy titles that did well at the festival and afterward: “Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here.”
Gadot recently starred in the Disney live-action adaptation of “Snow White,” with Julian Schnabel‘s “Hand Of Dante” and Amazon MGM Studios‘ “The Runner” on the way. Schoenaert’s recent work includes Netflix‘s “The Old Guard 2” and Terrence Malick‘s upcoming “The Way Of The Wind.” The actor is currently shooting “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” for the DCU.
Caro’s directing credits include “The Mother,” Disney’s live-action “Mulan,” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife.” The Firpos have a Western series in the works for Prime Video: “Butch & Sundance,” with Glen Powell and Regé-Jean Page set to star.
As for a potential release date for “Ruin”? Let’s call it late 2026/early 2027.
