A gunman went on a rampage Thursday at Florida State University, killing two people and injuring six others.

Here’s a timeline of the day’s tragic events:

11:50 a.m. – A gunman, later identified as Phoenix Ikner, begins to open fire at the FSU Student Union, using a handgun that belonged to his mother, a Leon County sheriff’s deputy.

Noon – Sirens begin blaring out in downtown Tallahassee as countless law enforcement officers and other first responders from multiple agencies descended on campus.

12:01 p.m. – FSU sends a text alert to students, faculty and staff informing them of a “dangerous situation” on campus.

“An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union. Police are on scene or on the way. Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

12:39 p.m. – FSU tells students in another emergency alert to “continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union.”

1:43 p.m. – Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks about the shooting in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding,” the governor said.

1:48 p.m. – USA TODAY reports that President Donald Trump had been “fully briefed” on the shooting.

“It’s a shame,” he said. “It’s a horrible thing, horrible that things like this take place.”

2:04 p.m. – The university announces on X that all Florida State athletic home events have been canceled through Sunday, April 20.

3:18 p.m. – FSU sends out an alert saying that the threat to campus was over.

“Law enforcement has neutralized the threat. Please avoid the Student Union, Bellamy, HCB Classroom Building, Rovetta A&B, Moore Auditorium, Shaw, Pepper, Hecht House and Carraway as they are still considered an active crime scene. Individuals are free to move about other areas of campus.”

4:30 p.m. – Law enforcement officials during a news conference at the Turnbull Conference Center announce that two people were killed and six others injured in the shooting.

They said the shooter was an FSU student but that the two people who died were not. FSU President Richard McCullough, who was in tears, said he and his wife had just visited victims in the hospital.

“We are a strong and united community and family,” McCullough said. “And so we will take care of all of you. We’ll get through this together.”

4:56 p.m. – Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare announces it is treating six people who were injured in the shooting. All were listed in fair condition.

“Our dedicated trauma teams are providing the highest level of care to all patients, and we remain fully mobilized to meet their needs,” the hospital said.

5:30 p.m. – Gov. DeSantis posts a video, saying he and First Lady Casey DeSantis stand in solidarity with and were praying for the entire FSU community.

The governor said they were mourning the two people who died and sending well wishes to the victims in the hospital.

“We are all Seminoles today. We stand by to help in any way that we can. God bless you and God bless Florida State University.”
