The Scottish Professional Football League could open the door to increase their number of senior clubs.

The SPFL’s Competitions Working Group met earlier this week to look at possible league reconstruction options.

And while Scottish Premiership will remain unchanged at 12 teams, there is a willingness to consider change from the Championship down to League Two.

The working group has now gone away to work on various proposals that could shake up the lower leagues.

One example that was discussed was increasing the Championship from 10 to 14 teams and League One from 10 to 16 teams.

There could then be scope for more teams to be brought in to make up a new-look League Two.

That and various proposals are being discussed, worked on and the best options will be put forward to the clubs and stakeholders.

The issue on this one is that more revenues would be needed because any monies would need to go round more clubs.

Any proposed changes wouldn’t come in until the 2026-27 season at the earliest.

The current pyramid set-up would remain in place to allow teams to step up from the Lowland or Highland Leagues into the SPFL.

There had been proposals put forward to extend the Premiership or even reduce it to 10 but those didn’t have enough support.

The clubs under the top-flight were keen for the clubs to let their solidarity payment, which is around ÂŁ7 million, to drip down but that was dismissed.
