Netflix has assembled an exciting cast for a heist thriller from “City of God” and “The Two Popes” director Fernando Meirelles. Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones will all star in “Here Comes the Flood” for the streaming service.
Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria announced the news during the streamer’s Upfronts presentation on Wednesday. The film hails from writer Simon Kinberg (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” upcoming “Star Wars” trilogy), who is also producing the film alongside Audrey Chon for his Genre Films banner, as is Meirelles. Samson Mucke is executive producing.
“Here Comes the Flood” is an unconventional heist movie about a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses.
Kinberg’s script dates as far back as 2020, when Netflix first won the spec script from Kinberg and later when Jason Bateman was in talks to direct the film. Now though, Pattinson has just closed his deal to star.
The film is Meirelles’ first feature since 2019’s “The Two Popes” also for Netflix, but he was a director on “The Sympathizer” and “Sugar” for television.
It’s an exciting cast, two of whom are going to be seen at films premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this week, including Pattinson in Lynne Ramsay’s “Die My Love” opposite Jennifer Lawrence, and Washington in Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest.” Edgar-Jones was most recently seen in “Twisters” and “On Swift Horses,” and she’s in production now on Chloe Domont’s next film “A Place in Hell.” Pattinson, who most recently starred in “Mickey 17,” is also currently shooting Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” and he’ll be seen in Kristoffer Borgli’s upcoming film “The Drama” alongside Zendaya.
Pattinson is represented by 3 Arts, WME, Curtis Brown Group, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dernand and Narrative. Edgar-Jones is represented by UTA, Hamilton Hodell, and Slone, Offer, Weber & Dern.
