It’s official: Darth Maul will return to the “Star Wars” universe, albeit in animated form.
Variety reports that Lucasfilm has a new animated series about the iconic villain in the work for a Disney+ premiere in 2026, which sees Sam Witwer return to voice Maul. The new shows, entitled “Maul — Shadow Lord,” was announced at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo today with the actor in attendance. Witwer’s previous roles as Maul include animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars and “Star Wars Rebels,” and the 2018 live-action film “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni and VP of Animation Athena Portilla announced “Maul — Shadow Lord” with a sneak peek at the series during a panel celebrating 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation. But neither of them revealed further details about the series. “Unfortunately, I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine,” said Portilla. “I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.”
Here’s what Witwer confirmed about “Maul — Shadow Lord” so far: the shows takes place “about a year” after the events of the Clone Wars, with Maul “dusting himself off a bit” after Ahsoka “kicked him to the curb”. “We learn some different things about this character,” continued the actor. “He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”
But that’s all Lucasfilm wants to tease about the show for now. Stay tuned for an official release date for “Maul — Shadow Lord” in 2026.
