Both the strikers were on target in 1-1 draw at Ibrox as Steven Naismith compares the hitman facing a similar issue
The real problem Cyriel Dessers has at Rangers isn’t missing chances, it’s his price tag.
That’s according to Steven Naismith, who hailed the way the Light Blues’ No9 gave his side the lead against Celtic at Ibrox.
Opposite number Adam Idah hit back in the second half to ease some the flak that’s been heading his way in recent weeks.
Despite Dessers’ impressive goal tally, he’s never convinced many as the main man up front at Ibrox.
But Naismith reckons the Nigeria international would get a much easier ride if the club hadn’t splashed nearly ÂŁ5million to bring him in.
“Adam Idah, I think him and Cyriel Dessers are similar because they came in for big money,” said the Sportscene pundit. “I wouldn’t say they are natural goalscorers.
“They can score goals and they do score goals, but they’re not natural.
“Dessers gets his critics, but he’s scored 25 goals this season and his one today is what I see as really good play.
“He uses his strength, gets a good touch and caresses the ball into the corner.
“But because he’s not a natural goalscorer, and maybe a reactive one and it looks an easy chance and he doesn’t take it, he gets criticised.”
Asked whether Rangers should keep Dessers for next season, Naismith replied: “A lot depends on who the manager is. There’s going to be big change.
“He scores goals and at Rangers and Celtic, you need guys that score goals.
“A big part of Dessers’ problem I think is the price tag. He’s come in as a big signing, must perform every week and at times he’s not.
“Rangers have dropped points, and the focus comes on you then.”
