Conor Coady could not hide his anguish after Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.
Going in to the game, the Foxes knew that only a win would keep their already slim survival hopes alive.
But any dreams of what would have been a miraculous escape were shattered by Liverpool, who consigned Ruud van Nistelrooy’s to a 23rd league defeat of the season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s strike was the difference-maker on Sunday, the Reds’ right back returning from injury to net the winner and leave his side one win away from their 20th English top-flight title.
Leicester’s relegation was their second in two years, having also been relegated in 2022-23. Not to mention, it comes at the first time of asking since their promotion from the Championship last season.
Centre back Coady lamented his side’s dismal campaign, which has seen them languish in the relegation zone for the better part of 33 matchweeks.
Conor Coady insisted Leicester have ‘not been good enough’ since the very start of the season
The Foxes’ relegation to the Championship was confirmed after a 1-0 defeat by Liverpool
This comes one season after Leicester’s Championship promotion and it is their second relegation since 2023
Coady said: ‘We’ve not been good enough all year, we haven’t. We look at today and I thought we played quite well today.
‘But we look back on the season and it’s not been anywhere near good enough. We’ve got to look at ourselves as players in the mirror.
‘And we have to now try and put this club in a better position come the summer because we haven’t been good enough.
‘We’ve taken a bit of stick and we’ll keep on taking stick because it’s deserved.
‘From minute one this season, we haven’t been at the level to compete in the Premier League that you need to be because it’ll chew you up and spit you out.
‘Not good enough and it’s something we’ve got to look at because we’re absolutely devastated.’
The Foxes join Southampton in already being relegated to the Championship, with those two teams likely to be joined by Ipswich Town.
Should that occur, it would mark the second successive season that all three promoted sides sides have been relegated to the second tier at the first time of asking.
Leicester have scored in just three different Premier League games since Boxing Day
Confirmation of Leicester’s relegation also heaped pressure on manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took over in December following the sacking of Steve Cooper.
Although it was hoped that the former Manchester United star could spark an upturn in form for the East Midlands outfit, results failed to materialise.
The team’s struggles were most evident in attack – as they managed to score in just three Premier League games since their reverse fixture against Liverpool on Boxing Day.
Leicester’s remaining five fixtures this season see them face Wolves, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Bournemouth.
