Mikel Arteta had made Zubimendi his first-choice target to strengthen in midfield, with Jorginho having agreed a deal to leave Arsenal for Flamengo. Thomas Partey’s future is also unclear with the 31-year-old’s current contract to expire in June. Negotiations are ongoing for a renewal.
Zubimendi’s impending arrival is a major boost to the North Londoners, following a fifth consecutive campaign without silverware. Arsenal are heading towards a third straight season as runners-up in the Premier League. The Gunners did reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2009, before losing 3-1 to PSG on aggregate.
Zubimendi agrees long-term Arsenal deal
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the deal has been verbally agreed between all parties, with the ‘formal steps’ set to follow. Zubimendi turned down a transfer to Liverpool last summer, but is now ready to leave boyhood side Sociedad in search of a new challenge.
This season, he ranks among La Liga’s top 10 players for progressive passes, tackles and successful take-on percentage. Zubimendi has earned 17 caps for Spain and was part of his nation’s success at Euro 2024.
