Ianis Hagi’s late leveller at Pittodire sparked wild scenes on the Rangers bench as Celtic were forced to wait to be crowned champions

Ally McCoist has admitted that the Rangers celebrations after their late equaliser against Aberdeen were “pathetic.”

Not for the first time this season, Barry Ferguson’s men found themselves 2-0 down before Ross McCausland was sent off, leaving them with a mountain to climb at Pittodrie, where defeat would have confirmed Celtic as Premiership champions.

But Hamza Igamane pulled one back before Ianis Hagi levelled with virtually the last kick of the game to escape with a 2-2 draw and force Celtic to wait at least a fortnight.

That sparked wild celebrations on the Gers bench but McCoist, lamenting the state of the title race in Scotland with Alan Brazil, laughed as he summed up the late scenes.

“Did you see them celebrating up at Aberdeen with that goal in the 95th minute?” He asked his talkSPORT co-host. “Aw man, it was hilarious. Absolutely hilarious.

“Anything to prolong you lot winning a league. That’s how sad it is. It’s pathetic.

“Aberdeen are going for third place and they’re sitting fifth now. That was a poor result. Rangers are down to ten men and you’re winning 2-0. “

Rangers are back on European duty this week with a massive Europa League quarter-final second leg clash with Athletic Bilbao.

Bilbao are the bookies’ favourites to go on and lift the trophy, with the Final taking place in their own San Mames stadium next month.

But after wins in Malmo, Nice and Istanbul already during this campaign, McCoist isn’t ruling Rangers out despite the difficulty of the task facing them, as they have tended to come alive on these occasions.

“We have a a chance. I mean, they’re favourites for the tournament,” he told talkSPORT.

“I would have taken a draw before the game last week, even before the sending off as well.

“You’d have to say Rangers’ best performances have come in Europe, particularly away from home.

“It’s a big, big ask but you never know.”
