Anything can happen in a Scottish Cup Final – but it’s easy to see why Aberdeen fans are fearing the worst.

The Dons face Celtic at the national stadium on May 24 but if their recent meeting at Pittodrie was an accurate dress rehearsal, then it may well get messy.

Brendan Rodgers’ team hit them for five and it now means they’ve shipped 14 goals across four games to the Premiership champions this season.

Jimmy Thelin’s side could hardly be in worse nick going into it. They lost four to Rangers at the weekend meaning they’ve shipped nine goals in the last four days and fans will need to see something encouraging against Dundee United in their final league game on Saturday to give them some sort of encouragement before the big trip to Glasgow.

Celtic are odds-on favourites for a reason and, in the eyes of some confident Hoops diehards, it’s not a case of if, it’s a case of how many.

Only three times in history has a Scottish Cup Final finished with a winning margin of five goals or more – the last one in 1972 when Dixie Deans scored a hattrick for Celtic in a 6-1 win over Hibs.

Never has a final finished with six goals between the sides. That would be a pessimistic prediction from the Dons’ perspective, of course, but it would be hard not to cast an eye back to the League Cup semi-final meeting between the sides this very season.

The final score then? Celtic 6 Aberdeen 0…

Only twice this side of the millennium has a Scottish Cup Final finished with four goals between the sides. Hearts’ famous 5-1 win over Hibs in 2012 is the most recent; the other was when Rangers sunk the Dons 4-0 back in 2000.

  • Celtic 5 St Mirren 1 (1908)
  • Rangers 5 Dumbarton 1 (1897)
  • Celtic 5 Queen’s Park 1 (1892)
  • Rangers 4 Aberdeen 0 (2000)
  • Celtic 4 Rangers 0 (1969)
