Krypto is all set to make his live-action debut in the upcoming movie Superman, which is releasing on July 11, 2025. James Gunn explains how Ozu responds to Krypto in a new clip

Superman director James Gunn recently posted a clip of his dog, Ozu, reacting to Krypto the Superdog, who was modeled after Ozu.

In the clip that Gunn posted on X (formerly Twitter), the director’s dog can be seen barking at a scene of Krypto and Superman while chasing Krypto around the screen. Gunn, who was recording the wholesome moment, said in the background, “This is my dog Ozu barking at the screen. Krypto was actually 3D-modeled after Ozu’s body. We 3D-captured Ozu and turned him into Krypto. We turned him white, and anyway, every time he sees himself come on screen, he tries to murder himself.”

Many fans reacted to the clip, and in reply to one user, Gunn stated that Ozu might seem cute, “but he does it constantly all day long.” He also shared that his dog was now aware of the whistle signal Superman sends Krypto in the trailer, and “he comes running from the other side of the house to attack the screen.”

While announcing Krypto’s introduction into the new DCU, Gunn posted, “Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story.”
