The title of most expensive movie ever made is no longer held by a Star Wars film, as new filings from Universal show that the 2022 Jurassic World Dominion has taken the crown.
What was Jurassic World Dominion’s budget?
According to newly published tax filings from Universal, Jurassic World Dominion’s budget was an incredible $583.9 million (£453.6 million). In terms of British pounds, this just barely edges out the 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had a reported budget of £452 million.
Part of the lofty budget for the movie includes the fact that it was filmed in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of shut downs across the world, many of the staff and crew behind the film had to stay quarantined in the UK, racking up a larger bill as they stayed for longer than anticipated.
The news comes amid a report from The Guardian on Universal’s decision to film the movie in the United Kingdom. Due to tax credits thanks to a government incentive to have more projects filmed in the UK, Universal was paid £89.1 million to film the 2022 blockbuster there, which is believed to be the largest payment for a film since the program began.
The incentive program allows for studios to be reimbursed up to 25.5% of the sum of the movie they make in the UK, so long as 10% of the film’s total costs are spent in the country.
While the numbers for the next entry in the Jurassic World franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, are unknown, it’s likely Universal will be doing the same thing as its done prior. Parts of Rebirth were filmed in London’s Sky Studios Elstree, with other filming locations including Thailand, Kalkara, and New York City.
