Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood wants to return to English football after growing tired of living overseas, according to reports. The 23-year-old has enjoyed an eye-catching debut season at Marseille but has also been the subject of criticism from his manager, Roberto De Zerbi, and the club’s fans for his work rate.
Greenwood left Old Trafford permanently last summer, joining Marseille in a £27million deal after spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe. He returned to action for the La Liga outfit after charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour were dropped in February 2023. United reportedly planned for Greenwood’s reintegration after an investigation into his arrest, but internal and external backlash forced a U-turn.
The England international scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances for Getafe before United cashed in when Marseille came knocking.
However, he’s reportedly already eyeing an escape from the south of France, and a Premier League return is between his crosshairs.
According to The Sun, Greenwood wants to move back to England with his partner Harriet Robson and their two young daughters.
An insider has claimed: “When Mason first left United, he loved Spain. He and Harriet moved to Madrid and rebuilt their lives.
“He loved the fact he could just play football, and his life off the pitch was not the subject of such intense focus.
“He was really happy to sign for Marseille and loved living in France. But he’s been abroad for nearly two years, and the novelty has worn off.
“Mason’s family visits, but he is very introverted and misses his extended family and the friends he has from home.
“A move back to the North West could suit him as he feels the vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit, and people may have moved on.”
Greenwood has impressed in front of goal for Marseille, matching Chelsea icon Didier Drogba’s 19-goal tally in his debut season at the Stade Velodrome in April.
His attitude and application have come under debate in the first year of his five-year contract, with De Zerbi insisting he “expects more from him”.
Marseille’s Ultras have also demanded more from Greenwood, unfurling a banner before a match against Montpellier on April 19 that read “get a move on”.
Greenwood went on to score a brace in the same game, firing Marseille to second in Ligue 1, but he is said to be pining for a Premier League comeback as early as this summer.
