In an emotional interview with Sky Sports News, Klopp, donning a Liverpool cap and shirt, allowed his emotions to get the better of him. He said: “It is unbelievable. It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible. For our fans: It’s for you. It is incredible. It is a joy to do it for you.
“We had to convince people and that is what we did together. It is a huge moment. I am completely overwhelmed. I had no idea it would feel like this…talking through the tears!
“It’s an incredible achievement by my players and it’s a huge joy for me to coach them. I haven’t waited 30 years, I have been here for four-and-a-half years, but it is quite an incredible achievement, especially with the three month break because nobody knew if we could go on. It is a mix of the history you created we are compared with.
“We had to write our own story. The atmosphere around the club, everyone lives football. We have a wonderful mix of players, all winners. It is so incredibly difficult in this competition but consistency drives us.”
However, the poignant scene was abruptly cut short as emotions took over, causing him to walk away from the camera, unable to continue due to the tears streaming down his face. Rumours have circulated about the much-admired ex-manager being seen in Liverpool or at Anfield for the final day spectacle.
He has been keeping his distance from the team to avoid any superstitious setbacks. But, he has hinted at joining any potential celebrations in a past dialogue.
At a charity event in South Africa, in response to inquiries about his attendance, he said: “Yes, the plan is [to be in Liverpool] but not on the bus, I will be there with the people I saw on the bus. That’s the idea to be honest, but we will see.
“I think I will be there for the last game… I didn’t want to go earlier to be honest because I didn’t want to jinx it all the time. If I’m in the stadium for the first time and they lose, ‘oh f*** sake’. So I go there when it’s decided.”
