Darth Maul Animated Show Gets Title & Release Date Window

At the recent Star Wars Celebration panel in Tokyo, Lucasfilm announced the official title and release date window for its upcoming Darth Maul animated show for Disney+. The project will feature the voice of Star Wars vet Sam Witwer as he reprises his role as Darth Maul from Dave Filoni’s popular The Clone Wars and Rebels shows.

Now titled as Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, the series is expected to take place “about a year” after the events of The Clone Wars. The first details about the project were announced by Filoni and Lucasfilm VP of animation Athena Portillo at the panel, along with Witwer.

“Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine,” Portillo said (via Variety). “I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.”

When is the release date window for the Darth Maul animated show?

At the moment, Lucasfilm is currently targeting a 2026 Disney+ release date for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. According to Witwer, the show promises to explore new sides of the titular villain. The character was originally portrayed by Ray Park and Peter Serafinowicz in 1999’s The Phantom Menace.

“We learn some different things about this character,” Witwer shared. “He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”

Besides the Darth Maul series, the studio is also currently working on two more animated shows, including the an all-new anthology series of animated shorts, Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld. It will drop on May 4, 2025. In addition, Lucasfilm has confirmed that Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Season 3 will be coming soon this year.
