With the NFL draft merely four days away, trying to figure out exactly what the Tennessee Titans have planned for draft weekend has been a challenging endeavor. Everything after the expected selection of Cam Ward at No. 1 overall is a bit of a mystery, and the team could go in any direction to help fill out their roster.Â
The growing consensus is that they will likely target a weapon to pair with Ward early in the draft, leaving the majority of their work for Day 3, where they are scheduled to have six selections over the final four rounds. While they have definite needs at edge and linebacker, they could use depth everywhere on their roster.Â
One area that could be addressed at some point on Day 3 is the running back position, with head coach Brian Callahan searching for a change of pace to complement Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears. Tennessee has shown interest in multiple backs during the pre-draft process, each with a different skill set. Now, the name of another back has surfaced that the Titans have had interest in: Liberty RB Quinton Cooley.Â
Cooley has been a productive back at Liberty, but he lacks elite traits, and his measurables are only average. He’s a tough, between-the-tackles back who is a grinder who could carve out a role as a short-yardage or goal-line back. He also brings high energy and should be able to find his way into the special teams rotation.Â
Likely a late-round or undrafted rookie free agent, his drive and consistent college production should give him a shot to compete for a job in the NFL. While he won’t blow anyone away with explosive plays or wow moments, he is built for the dirty work and tough yards and could be an interesting change-of-pace in a committee backfield.Â
