Rebel Wilson Details How Weight Loss Impacted Her Career

Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson has come out to shed light on the influence her weight loss has had on her acting career. The Australian Theatre for Young People alum entered the entertainment industry after securing a 2002 scholarship initiated by Nicole Kidman, which allowed her to enroll in the Second City Training Centre. Since then, Rebel Wilson has primarily made appearances in comedic roles, including movies such as Bridesmaids, Jojo Rabbit, Senior Year, and more. However, according to the multi-faceted actress, shedding some pounds in recent years seems to have assisted her in diversifying her acting choices.

So, here’s what Wilson had to say about the effect of her weight loss on her career in the entertainment industry.

What did Rebel Wilson say about weight loss and her career?

The 45-year-old Australian actress noted that she has managed to secure “more serious roles” ever since she lost about 80 pounds in 2020.

“From that point, I started getting offered more serious roles. And I did this British indie movie that was really serious about traumatic brain injury, and then now I’m playing Lady Capulet,” Rebel Wilson told SiriusXM’s Ben +1.

The two-time MTV Movie Award winner also explained how her health journey helped her redefine her image in Hollywood, saying, “I think I kind of untypecast myself by losing weight. I mean, I loved being the bigger, funny girl, loved playing Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect movies. It was so cool, and that still is me in so many respects, but I guess people started to see me a bit differently.”

Wilson then highlighted the kind of roles that she has been yearning for for a long time. She stated, “I wanted to be like Dame Judi Dench and be really serious. It’s just, I had something that people would like to laugh at. And then Nicole Kidman gave me this scholarship to come to America and specialize in comedy, and so that’s what I did. And then when I came to Hollywood, I was just the full comedy girl. But now it’s kind of like going back to my roots as an actress and doing some serious stuff.”

Rebel Wilson has always been vocal about her weight loss, highlighting the difficulties she faced during her transformative journey on multiple occasions. The comedian/actress has even shared that the increased chances of having successful IVF treatments motivated her health journey. Wilson subsequently welcomed a healthy girl child in November 2022 via surrogacy.
