Paul Rudd Almost Lost an Iconic Role Due to a Haircut

One of Paul Rudd’s most memorable roles came in 1995’s Clueless, a film the actor recently revealed he almost wasn’t in due to his haircut.

What did Paul Rudd say about his role in Clueless?

During a recent appearance on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, Rudd revealed that he was asked to read for the role of Josh in the movie. However, after buzzing his shoulder-length, he had a chance run in with the film’s director, Amy Heckerling, who was shocked at the move.

“I was walking past a barbershop and I just went in and said ‘Just buzz my head,’” said Rudd. “And then a week later, I went into a restaurant, and Amy Heckerling . . . was eating there, and she looked at me and, she froze, and said ‘What did you? What did you do with your hair?’”

At the time, Rudd had shoulder-length hair and mentioned that he was “stupidly cavalier” about the whole situation and was content with whatever happened. He went on to mention that he had to do a screen test for the role, and was put in a wig mimicking his hair. It ended up not working, Rudd said, but he still got the role, and by the time filming had begun, his hair had grown enough to be acceptable for the role.

Alongside Rudd, Clueless also featured an all-star cast of stars, including Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Dan Hedaya, Jeremy Sisto, Breckin Meyer, and more. The film was a smash hit and has developed a massive cult following in the years since its release. It is often viewed as one of the greatest coming-of-age teen films of all time.
