“The Long Walk takes place in the future in which 100 teenage boys embark on an annual competition known as The Long Walk,” a description of the film reads, via Deadline. “The rules are simple: maintain a speed above 4 miles per hour. Receive three warnings in an hour and you’re shot dead. The last one walking gets whatever he wants for the rest of his life.”
What did Stephen King say about The Long Walk?
Speaking with Vanity Fair, King addressed how his novel was originally perceived to be a political allegory for the Vietnam War.
“You write from your times, so certainly, that was in my mind. But I never thought about it consciously,” he said. “I was writing a kind of a brutal thing. It was hopeless, and just what you write when you’re 19 years old, man. You’re full of beans and you’re full of cynicism, and that’s the way it was.”
Lawrence is best known for directing all of the films in The Hunger Games franchise, apart from the first one. Lawrence said about The Long Walk, “Anything that has a contest with death as the stakes and some sort of big prize if you win can be connected in some way. But in The Hunger Games, everybody’s competing in a very different kind of way. There are alliances and you are trying to kill one another. Here, you’re not actually trying to kill one another. It’s a very different dynamic, in terms of relationships.”
The Long Walk will be released in United States theaters on September 12, 2025, by Lionsgate.
