Sega is bringing back Ecco the Dolphin with a couple of remasters and a brand new entry in over 20 years. However, it seems it’ll be some time until we see more of the upcoming releases.
Sega classics Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time are getting remastered
As spotted by Wario64, there is a countdown on the official Ecco the Dolphin website. Typically, when a company adds a countdown timer, its for an announcement that is pretty imminent. That does not seem the case for these Sega remasters, as the timer hits zero in about 355 days.
In a recent interview with Xbox, Ecco the Dolphin creator Ed Annunziata revealed the “entire” original team is working on remasters for the first entry, as well as its sequel Ecco: The Tides of Time. Additionally, the devs are working on a third game, with “contemporary play and GPU sensibilities.”
“Me and the entire original team are going to Remaster the original Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time games,” said Annunziata. “Then we will make a new, third game with contemporary play and GPU sensibilities. Stay tuned to eccothedolphin.com.”
Ecco the Dolphin was originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It also came to Sega CD, Master System, and Game Gear. It has been rereleased on more modern platforms, including the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo 3DS.
Ecco: The Tides of Time was released in 1994, just two years after the original. It came to Sega Genesis, Game Gear, and Sega CD. The sequel has also released on the Nintendo Wii, and was part of the Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, which was available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
There really isn’t much information regarding the unnamed third game from the Ecco the Dolphin series. However, in about 8528 hours from this writing, we will likely learn more.
