Mike Flanagan’s Carrie TV show is on the verge of casting its lead.
Last week, insider Daniel Richtman reported that Hereditary star Milly Shapiro was in talks to star as Carrie White in Flanagan’s series. However, plans have changed, as a new actress has emerged as the frontrunner to lead the TV show.
Who will lead Mike Flanagan’s Carrie TV show?
Per Variety, Summer H. Howell is on the verge of a deal to star in the Carrie TV show. Negotiations are currently “ongoing” for Howell to join the series.
Howell is no stranger to horror IP, appearing in two movies from the Child’s Play franchise: 2013’s Curse of Chucky and 2017’s Cult of Chucky. Howell is arguably best known for her roles in Hunter Hunter and Clouds, two films released in 2020.
Howell’s recent credits include Time Cut, Spirit in the Blood, All Fun and Games, and Abducted by My Teacher: The Elizabeth Thomas Story.
Flanagan’s TV adaptation of Carrie was first reported in October. Amazon MGM Studios has not formally announced the project. Though Variety’s report on Howell notes an official series announcement is “imminent.”
The series logline reads, “A bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White (Howell), who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public high school, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
Flanagan will write, executive produce, direct, and showrun Carrie. Flanagan’s partner at Intrepid Pictures, Trevor Macy, will also executive produce.
Carrie is based on Stephen King’s first published novel in 1974. Two years later, Brian De Palma directed an adaptation of Carrie, with Sissy Spacek in the titular role and Piper Laurie as Carrie’s mother, Margaret White. Other notable adaptations include 1999’s The Rage: Carrie 2, the 2002 made-for-TV movie at NBC, and the 2013 remake.
